Default Art??

Ok, looking at another thread recently, I feel like I'm missing something..

Does anyone understand why certain, very untalented artists, manage to get ludicrous amounts of money for what is basically nothing I would want on my wall, and what do people get from these paintings that I'm obviously missing. I need some help here, seriously, I'm not stupid, but I really can't comprehend what people get from these paintings. Is it really the case that rich people have run out of stuff to spend money on, all the decent artists are dead and their paintings in museums, so they have to artificially make somebody famous, pay people money to find reasons why this persons work is good, just so they can say they have an original of this person on their wall, because seriously, I don't mind putting some coloured lines on a canvas if you want to pay me $72 million for it. I promise that if you pay me that, I'll never do anything "artistic" again and will stick to putting photos that resemble something into my camera instead (for $100million I won't even do that!)

NGA | Mark Rothko | Classic Paintings 2a

Either the world has gone mad or I've missed something important about "art" that I'd quite like to understand, it's obviously worth it. Someone please help.

"From that time on he would work almost invariably within this format, suggesting in numerous variations of colour and tone an astonishing range of atmospheres and moods. " I think that’s what makes it so expensive, you must have to pay someone a lot of money to write something like that and stick by it when someone asked if you meant it

Plus there is the cost of spiking everyone’s drink with acid when they come to see it so they think it’s amazing

Thought so.. So really it's shallow "art" for shallow people.

That is about it as far as I am concerned.

Seems that someone (such as Saatchi) says "this is great" and everyone in that circle has to agree or be seen to be an "outsider".

I know of no "normal" person who believes for instance that Tracy Emins dirty bed (complete with used condoms) could possibly be classed as art, but hey, Saatchi says it is so therefore it must be.

I believe her latest includes her used tampons - yeah sure, that's art. !!!!!

Art is and has always been in the eye of the beholder but for some then people have to be told.

What makes your shit so great? How is lining stuff up and pressing a button more creative and more "art" than what they do?

I'm staying out of this one. I like what I like, and it is what it is.

It's not. And a lot of us make "shallow art" with our photography....
I'm guilty. I mean, what makes a picture of a bird or building "art"? What about any "typical portrait"? Yes, it may take "skill" to do well, but not "talent".
Now, someone who can convey a feeling/emotion, or envision an image and then create it, that takes "talent" (and skill) and then photography becomes "art".

just my 2c....

I've never really "got" modern art. I like to visit art Galleries from time to time but when I see a crowd ooohing and arrrring at a painting of two straight lines it always baffles me.

With the picture that John linked to I think it conjures up images that are personal to you. For me it kind of reminded me of a licorice allsort.

See here:

the answer sounds trite but it holds truth

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

What speaks to me is shallow to another. What someone says is worth $1,000,000,000 to me looks no better than the "Art" painted by an elephant.

I don't judge art. I love black velvet Elvis paintings and my own photographs. I have no taste or standards.
