Default Embedding GPS Coordinates into Photo's?

I'm submitting a proposal for a contract and one of the stipulations is that all photo's have to have the GPS Coordinates Embedded in the images as Meta Tags.

How exactly does one do something like that? Would I have to purchase something that will do that or can you do it manually?

Thanks

Don't know what type camera you have, but Nikon has a unit (think its a GPS-1) that sits on the camera hotshoe and plugs into the camera and provides all this data. There are non-oem units as well. Not all that expensive.

How exact do they have to be?
I have been asked to do this before for travel stuff but when questioned client was ok with them being "rough" coordinates.
So I just embedded them later.
Some I had from my sat nav or mobile and some from google earth after the event.

Sony A55 has a built in GPS that will do the job for you. Didn't have time to read this, but it looks hopeful:

Add GPS Information to Image EXIF Philip Hendry's Blog

You can do it manually. I use GPSPhotoLinker and any old GPS device, but you don't necessarily need one. You can also type in longitude/latitude coordinates and have them embedded in the EXIF. Or you could do it old school with exiftool. Not sure if iPhoto and Picasa embed the geotagging into the EXIF, but I'd try those first. They use the GoogleMaps API so you just click on Google maps where you took the photo, and the image is geotagged with the coordinates.

No idea what you'd use on the Windows side of the fence, but there's bound to be something. ExifGeoTagging, maybe?

some of the eye-fi cards support geo-tagging. They use a database of wifi access points and the location of each. If your picture is snapped within range of a wifi access point, it makes a note of it, looks it up in a database and extracts your position. you don't actually use the access point. but the you capture it's unique id.

While not as accurate as a gps unit, might be cheaper.

Sony A55 got a built in gps.

Some Nikon DSLR supports direct geotagging BetterPhoto Instructor Insights: GPS Add-on Units for DSLR Cameras

Some Canon can geotag by connecting a WTF device which cost quite a lot.

And all digital camera can geotag the photos by manually or by matching afterward with the data recorded on data loggers.

There are also units that just track where you go. Then go and match that track with the photos later in software. Im too lazy to post a link but just google for "gps photo tracker". I got mine for $30.

If you use Lightroom, I use this plugin to add my GPS coordinates: Jeffrey Friedl's Blog Jeffrey’s “GPS-Support” Geoencoding Plugin for Lightroom . You can do it manually or with any kml track if you have one and it will try to match the timestamps from the file to the timestamp of your photo.
