Default Cropping

I have a Nikon D3100 and I try to touch up and crop my photos the best I can but if I have a horizontal photo I can only crop it horizontally and the same with a vertical picture, only can crop vertically. Am I missing a feature here. I have tried to figure it out myself but haven't had any luck... Thanks for any potential help

I'm cropping on the camera before they are uploaded.

Don't do that.

Agreed with Jon, just do your cropping when you process. You may then tell your software to keep the aspect ratio of your image, but can choose a horizontal or vertical crop dimension yourself.

Sorry.. I'll go into more detail. When you crop on a large screen, you can see what you're cropping much better, you can crop down to a single pixel if you wish and get a much better impression of the overall effect of the crop, and you can always (if you're in Lightroom) go back to the original.. When you crop on your camera it's clumsy guesswork, if you make a mistake and save, it's gone. Don't do it.. Use your camera for photographs and your computer for editing.. The right tool for the job.
