Sounds like he's saying its a great photo, but the large distracting watermark is a blemish

Its up to you if you want to keep your work watermarked and slightly more safe from copyright infringement or whether you would rather just present great photography to the world and not care if its ripped off.

I don't know about the "reflexive mark of possessiveness", but I really don't think your watermark is too large or distracting. In fact, I'd say it's in a location that is probably too easy to crop out for someone who wants to steal it.
I wouldn't worry about the comment too much. It's up to you to protect your own work.

I was expecting a very in your face watermark.....I had to look hard for it so not sure the comment was warranted in the way it came across.

Probably just annoyed that when they nick (steal) it they will have to crop it or clone out the watermark.
Ignore the remark. The watermark is not intrusive.

Don't worry, your watermark is not that bad. I had even worse at one point. Thinking much about such comments will not make any good for you instead think about your future shoots.

Yeah I agree, they probably wanted to use it and were annoyed. I didn't even see it at first and had to look :P

I was going to say "what watermark?" & then ask if you'd removed it. But went back for a second look and spotted it. Hardly describe it as marring the picture. Lovely shot BTW.
