I never read the F&I series, but was quite eagerly awaiting this. It's a little slow to start, but as always the HBO production team seems to be on the right track with it... as high fantasy goes though, I have very lofty expectations!

...seeing him almost the same character, but called Ned... well, that's kind of weird. Half expected the king to be called Dave and the queen to be called Sharon or something. |

I been a GRRM fan since the '80s, long before the Song of Ice and Fire was even a glint in his eye. I can remember when he was a hard SF writer, and then a television writer for Beauty and the Beast (the Linda Hamilton/Ron Perlman one. Go find an episode called "Snow" and watch two people dressed in black (Lance Henriksen & Stephen McHattie) exchange the lines "Cold night." "Yes. Winter is coming.") and the 1985 Twilight Zone revival (the one where Wes Craven did most of the directing, and people like Harlan Ellison were writing scripts for folks like Bruce Willis and Helen Mirren. Yes. It's out on DVD). I wept when Max Headroom got cancelled because GRRM's script for it had just gone into pre-production. ![]() There are good reasons why this is making a decent tv show. Also, if you're a Buffy fan, Jane Espenson is writing episode 6 ("A Golden Crown") and George himself is scripting episode 8 ("The Pointy End"). No, you did not need to tell me about GAME OF THRONES. Fear me. I could so spoil stuff for you, you have NO idea. I have mentioned things to George and he's looked at me with a narrowed eyes and said, "Damn. You weren't supposed to notice that." I have been sitting on my hands and going "Homina homina homina" for months.I was posting about the throne photo op for folks in Philadelphia, NYC, LA, and SF before the premiere. BTW, the second series (to be based on A Clash of Kings is a go. HBO already renewed. George says, however, that when they hit Storm of Swords chances are good it'll be split over two series. The showrunners say they already have a splitting point picked out. I am in agony over the fact that A Dance With Dragons (book 5) comes in in early July, and gives me a whole whopping 8 days to slam it back (1500 pages in manuscript, btw), before Comic-Con starts. Oy. Dude, all the boobs and blades you could possibly want.

I'm pleased that you mentioned HBO already re-upped the franchise... it'll be something to keep me paying my HBO subscription aside from True Blood...
It would be nice to get into another high fantasy series of reading though. Sadly after all this time, I really haven't found one to even scratch the best of the best though, that being Tolkien. |
