owner of my first DSLR...aperture

when i set it manually i can set it to 4.2 when i scan around with it in auto it seems to go as low as 3.7.....what it the lowest aperture setting on this camera/lens? (18x55) lens

Really need to know more. The lens will tell you what it is, though. For example, on the front of my Canon 18-55 "kit lens" it says "EF-S 18-55 1:3.5-5.6" So, the "lowest" aperture setting is based on the focal length I'm "zoomed" to. At 18mm then it's 3.5 and at 55mm it's 5.6. Anything in between is just that.
