Default Will Nikkor 50mm f1.8 be good for landscape also?

can 50mm f1.8 be used for landscape photography?

I m looking at photographing
1. Snow covered mountains and lakes, landscapes
2. Potraits
3. flowers

I have a d3100 with 18-55mm lense now.
Thinking to have 50mm f1.8.

Will it be a good add on to existing 18-55mm?

Thanks in advance,
shankar

Always a good lens to have in your bag. It'll give you low light capabilities that your 18-55 will not, has very nice bokah making it a very good choice for items 2 and 3 above. Added bonus..cost effective

What he said ^^^

At the price this lens sells for, it's almost a no brainer. True, not the best for landscapes, but it's low light capabilities will win you over. You can seldom find a lens that is not only inexpensive but of good quality. This is one of them

Only thing to consider is that the current AF-D version of the 50mm f/1.8 will NOT autofocus on your D3100. Rumours (fairly good ones, it seems) are of an AF-S version, which would be fully-functional on your body, but those aren't guarantees and the price will be higher

I use this lens on my D300 all the time for walking around and landscape photos. When you consider the price, even when dealing with focusing (you can easily manually focus this lens) it completely worth it. Consider, take care of it, keep it clean and this lens will last you a lifetime; you may very well upgrade to a camera that the auto-focus works on. Great investment in your photography.

A good friend of mine suggested I get that lens for my d-90 and it is one I use nearly everyday. It is great for getting shots of my granddaughter (just turned one so she is moving a lot). I have been using it outside on some spring buds and need to manually focus for the closer shots and it works great. Never tried it for any landscapes but maybe I will now that you brought it up. Oh, by the way, it is the least expensive lens in my bag so that really makes it great!

Had a 50mm prime for my Sony for 12 months.. Used it for landscapes once. The FoV isn't big enough to be useful for a broad landscape, and the magnification isn't enough to be used as a zoom.. The f/1.8 isn't so useful for landscapes either.

I had one of these on my D7000 last week, and then decided on a 35mm. I'll end up with a 20mm 2.8 first I think.

I can imagine the 50mm would be better for portraits, but I don't take them.

If the 50mm fits the FoV you want for a landscape shot, there's no reason not to stop it down to f/8-f/16 and use it for just that purpose. And you can always panostitch to cover a wider field of view.

People shoot landscapes with all sorts of different focal lengths from wide to telephoto. Just because most folks prefer using a wide angle to cram the entire vista in doesn't mean a 50mm can't be used for landscape/cityscape shots.
