I've been researching the Gorillapod and find there to be a few different types. One for DSLR, one that says it's for SLR-Zoom Flexible, then of course the variety of colors. This page shows the different types of Gorillapods. Is there truly a difference that one would have to spend $48 vs $22? Are the ones that say they are for SLR's stronger? Any feedback would be great. Thanks, Kirk

yes. in short. totally yes.
The ones that are made for your basic P&S wouldn't have the strength to hold a dSLR up.

Thanks for the response. I just want to make sure my gear is supported and it makes sense that they'd have a different pod for lighter & heavier cameras.

Default Gorillapod failed... over water.

I had purchased one of the Joby magnetic gorillapods, attached it to the top rail of a boat (wrapped it around the rail instead of using the magnets just to ensure that it would not fall off) and attached my GoPro Hero to it. Was working fine until out of nowhere it just tilted down and the top part of the mount just dropped off and into the water. I dove in after it but it was too late... it was gone.

The strange part is that we were just sitting there, chilling; No waves, no wind and the boat was not moving (was not even turned on). $360 on that GoPro Hero (299 + tax and 1yr damage protection from Best Buy)...

Has anyone else had this happen? Or something similar?

I have the GorillaPod GP3.
It will hold up a D3100 with the 55-200mm VR lens. That's the heaviest combination I have.

Because it's so compact, it gets much more action than my tripod.
