The iron-on transfers look horrible no matter what printer you use. If you really want to do this, I would suggest finding someone that does digital direct to garment printing.

I remember an experiment in college where we transferred laser printer toner to tshirts. I can't remember how it was done, maybe something with acetone? Although I wouldnt mix acetone with an iron...
It worked okay, but it was black and white only, and fine details were lost. Best for posterized prints and text only. You run through a lot of trials, and a lot of white shirts. But it was interesting at the time.

You have a point, even it said to be a waste of money, i should give it a try...good if works, if not, charge to experience...

I would suggest heading over to t-shirtforums.com and start reading up. Like has already been said, I don't think a picture would actually look all that good on a shirt. If you want it to look the best possible though, throw away the iron, throw away the transfer papers sold at Walmart. Get a quality heat press and spend some money on some quality transfer papers. As for the printer, off the top of my head I can't remember what type is supposed to be used, but I've heard good things about the Epson Durabright inks like my CX5000 uses.

I dabbled a few years ago, but just decided to stay away from it and just keep the t-shirt vinyl and heat press for when I need to expand my own wardrobe

I have a shirt that has a photo on it from a fundraising group and it looks awesome. Black shirts and the photo is found here:
I got mine about 4 years ago.

Doing it on your own would be a bad idea......they get wrinkled in heat, wore off easily, etc...just get it printed! Plenty of places online to do it with.

You can try Custom T-Shirts, Unique Gifts, Posters, & Personalized Mugs | CafePress for a start. I really don't think it's that expensive at all and you can choose to print on other stuff, too (mugs, caps, bags, etc).

You do, however think about colour compatibility when choosing t-shirt colours. Example, if you are going to use one of your colour photos on t-shirt, safe to use perhaps a white one as other coloured shirts will not show the colour print well. You can read about this, anyway, on FAQ's and tips and stuff.

Cheers and have fun!
