If it's the sound that the dog is afraid of, then placing the camera on the floor and triggering it remotely while the dog examines it should work. If it's the shape, then there really isnt anything but letting the dog examine and explore it a bit.

I think you are the right track by wanting the dog to form a positive association with the camera. Like the last poster said, it would help to know what exactly the dog is afraid of: the flash? the noises? having a lens pointed at him?

My dog isn’t afraid of the camera, but he doesn’t like the flash so I stopped using it when taking pictures of him. If the dog is scared the noises, I’d try giving him a really tasty treat as soon as he hears the noise. If the treat is really good - like a little piece of hot dog or cheese - it should help the dog focus on the treat.

If it’s scaring him just to have the camera pointed at him, he might think that the camera is “challenging” him, because in dog language staring at someone is rude and confrontational. Maybe your friend can try taking pictures from farther away, and from a side view rather than right in his face.

And if a dog is scared of something, be sure that he isn’t “trapped” in the situation. If the camera is out and he doesn’t want to be in the picture, make sure he can go into another room or get to a distance where he feels safe.

Get rid of the dog. A camera will never poop on the couch.

That begs to be a signature somewhere!

My mom's dog used to be afraid of the flash. No more. Now she expects a treat every time it goes off.

Let the dog smell the camera until satisfied. Next time he sees the camera, a quick smell and he won't be as intrusive as before. They just need to get familiar with it.

positive association is the dogs understand the world. Short leash, couple of treats and by the end of the day you should be able to get the dog to fetch the camera and maybe even change lenses for you.

When all else fails, call Cesar Millan's Official Website | Achieving balance between people and dogs.
