Default Color can kill...

I've not often thought of color in a 'it could totally change the look I'm after' kind of way... I've just finished reading the new eBook dPS has released, written by awesome travel photographer Mitchell Kanashkevich (You will have seen his images around) and came across this gem which got me thinking...

Any time we draw attention to any one color and thus an area or element
in the photograph we actually begin to communicate from within the frame.
We take the first steps towards telling stories and evoking feelings.

Eyes: around the pumpkin, straight to the woman... And I thought, yes, as soon as I saw the pumpkin and then as my eyes progressed as the image dictated, the woman, I knew what was going on.

If you purchase the eBook, I'd love to hear your thoughts... there's also a second eBook bundled in (Seeing the light, also by Mitchell) which has made me think about my lighting... It's nice when you get a bit of a photographic SLAP that makes you think differently.

That's interesting Sime . I haven't read the book but what really draws me into this photo is the bright blue jumper she is wearing.

The second book (chucked in with the first book) is damn good! many lighting diagrams to be had (I've asked the author if I can post one example here)

It's basics, it's very helpful for me, that's for sure... you get to the point where you think "Oh, yeah I know this stuff..."

anyway, thought it was cool and that I'd share...

Nice plug.

In the first image my eye actually moves in relation to brightness....The lower lt pumpkins (hottest/most vibrant) up to the wall (shadow/flash/face) then the blue. (the upper rt negative area kind of gets ignored).

But you're right, I've never really considered changing colors for feel...that's more a "studio thing".
And you are also right about "Oh, yeah I know this stuff"...Often I don't pay enough attention to "this stuff" when it really could help the photograph, and I know better.

Sime,

Have not purchased the new e-book but several months ago purchased and have read "Seeing the Light". I found the first part of the book interesting but because my off camera flash equipment is marginal the last few chapters on light reflection and natural light were more interesting to me and more appropriate for me to practice with the gear that I own.

I liked the writing and photos of the author, Mitchell Kanashkevich, and will most likely purchase his new book.

Sime: Are there any plans on making the eBook less, well, "e"?
