Default Question on ownership rights

I am currently taking a digital photography class at my university and it requires I do work on sample images as well as my own. My work done on sample images, can I call them my own? Or must I somehow find the original photographer and cite the source if I were to say post them to my flickr.

Or am I just asking the wrong person and should I go to my professor on this one?

No, you cannot. How are the photos being supplied to you...from the school?

Yes from the school. It is on the computers hard drive in class under our class section. Each day I attend I edit several photos. Everything is provided except the alterations, crops, layers, masks etc.

I like to pay attribute when its due and over cautious is better than not.

Can we assume that the school has full rights to use the photos for instructional purposes? You can check this with the prof, for sure

I reckon if you want to put it on flickr, give credit to the school. I am sure that the school would be ok with that as they would have some, if not, full rights to the photo unless the school stipulates restricted use of it that includes no public viewing of the photo.

Aaach, do what autofocus says - just ask your professor just to be safe. He or she may be as good as disclosing to the whole class what and how the students can use it.

I would be willing to bet that the school does not have any rights to the photos. They may just be images from the internet. Under fair use rights, students may use copyrighted photos/images for educational use. The only thing is, the student cannot publish the work without the permission of the owner.
