Default new camera

What is the difference between a DSLR and the sony alpha nex series? I have not handled a dslr before. I know some basic things of digital cameras and my previous camera was a KODAK Z8612. Which camera should I buy? I want a slr, but i am not sure whether to directly buy one or buy a simpler camera.

Here are a couple links to get you started:

Mirrorless interchangeable lens camera - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As you mentioned, these aren't DSLR's, but do offer some of the benefits (decent-sized sensors, interchangeable lenses). As far as "which you should buy", we probably need a little more info about your experience level, intentions to grow / upgrade, etc.

Personally, I think I'd be inclined to either stick with a "bridge" style P&S or get into a true DSLR, but there are scenarios where these EVIL (electronic viewfinder interchangeable lens) cameras make sense. Do you think you could share a little more info about what you're evaluating?

The NEX series uses the same sensor as a dSLR, and has interchangeable lenses, but is otherwise a compact camera.

Go and handle them both: you'll see immediately.

I think the differences have already been stated. The only other thing to consider is that the selection of lenses for the NEX cameras is still quite small (and quite expensive). For example, by me, the 18-200mm lens is about 2x the price of the body plus 2 lens kit. So, I haven't really been tempted by that given the expense. Although that said, if you don't mind manual focus there are adapters for almost every type of lens out there.

I have a NEX-3 for the purpose of having a good compact camera. Would it replace my DSLR? Not really, but that said, there are times where I could take my DSLR, but because of size I wind up taking the NEX because it fits in my coat pocket. I think that the nice part about is that it can be as simple as you want it to be. I think you just have to make your choice about size and lens selection and that will be a starting point for whether something like this or a regular DSLR will be the appropriate choice for you.

Sorry for a late reply. I am basically a beginner. I want to learn good photography. It is not only a hobby for me. It is also necessary for my subject, geology. I have to take pictures for my documenting my geological field work.

From my previous camera(Z8612), I know how to change aperture, shutter speed and ISO. I want to have more control over my pictures.

Since the last time i posted, I have talked to people. Now, i think it is better to directly invest on a DSLR, rather than a sony alpha nex with the same money.

I have shortlisted Canon rebel XSi, Canon Rebel T3 and Nikon D40. My budget is 500-600$. I want help to choose between these.

As for what I am evaluating, I am not sure. Since I am a beginner and this is my first DSLR, I want a light weight and easy to use dslr.

Dear rahuldg11,
Get off the programmed or auto modes on the camera, play with the aperture priority setting and start playing with different aperture settings in relation to your shutter speed. In this mode, you set the aperture and the camera will follow with the proper shutter speed for you. The more you close your aperture, the more depth of field you have. For example, choose a very large aperture, like f2.8 to blur the background in a portrait or use a very small aperture like f22 to bring the whole scene into focus, such as in your Niagara Falls picture.
Also look into tripod supports and longer exposures as when you close down the aperture, your shutter speed will become longer, possibly too long to hand hold. So put her on a tripod and play with long exposures as well. This is how to get that cottony, blurred feel to the flowing waterfall, while keeping the rest of the photo perfectly in focus. Learn how your shutter speeds and aperture relate and how you can get creative with them and you're on your way. Good luck!
