Default A New 7D or Not

I found an add in our local Gumtree in Sydney (like Craigslist), for a 7D for $750 or Euro530. I sent a request to see if it was still available. Here is the reply:

Hello,

Still available. BRAND NEW sealed with receipt and manufacturer warranty.
I'm willing to pay for all shipping and insurance fees because I'm in UK.
I have my own wholesale company here and I sold a lot of products all over the world.

Price: AU $730.00
Condition: New
Delivery: 3-4 days
Return policy: 5 days

If you want to place your order, just give me your full name and delivery address so that I can arrange the shipment.
The shipping company will handle the payment. You'll pay with cash.

Thanks!

What do you think? Genuine or scam?

Cheers,

John W

Does it sound too good to be true?

Local on line prices of $AU1999 from a genuine Australian Canon dealer to $AU1649 from a grey market importer.

What do you think?

Where are the "warranty" repairs carried out.

I believe Canon Australia will only repair cameras sold by genuine Australian Canon dealers.

Any buyer protection when paying cash or through gumtree?

Personally, unless payment, by me, is made after delivery of the camera, to me, I wouldn't touch it with a 40' pole, even then...................

Sounds too good to be true.

What about customer service, warranty and replacement should there be something wrong with the camera?

I know it's so tempting to buy cameras outside Australia (or anything for that matter) as things are so expensive in this country, but then what are you willing to risk just for the sake of getting them cheaper?

Also, will the free shipping include any potential customs taxes should it be charged?

I'd ask all the questions I can before purchasing.

There's the answer right there. Personally I'd not touch it.

Default I would avoid this

Hi,

I had some experience looking at buying caravans. I came across two scams operating in a similar way. Usually something to do with someone based overseas who uses a local holding company. They didn't ask me to pay upfront, they asked for name and address details but they were certainly a scam and I reported them.

You don't need to give them a name or detailed address for them to figure out shipping costs etc. If you do give them an address, try your work address so they don't have your home address. Also be wary if giving people your phone numbers as if they have your name, address and phone number, they can sign you up for things! Sounds dodgey to me. Ask them if they will provide you an invoice with an ABN etc as you require it for tax purposes. I would say they will disappear shortly after that.

Good luck with it and having said all that, if you do go ahead and a 7D arrives for that price, let us all know

Regards Ian

Yes you're all spot on. I know I can screw Gerry Harvey down to $1500, with Australian warranty, plugs, peace of mind. But its good to see that you agree with my thoughts. PLease be aware of scammers with cheap deals. (probably from Nigeria)

Still I'm looking to upgrade Win7 Home Premium to Win7 Pro. Microsoft Australia wants $399 for the upgrade, I can buy it online from a US reseller for $99. By the way, if I go onto the MS site in USA, it recognises my location and tells me to bugger off to MS Australia.

Who's the software pirate?

Cheers,

John W
