Exclamation HELP!! Do I need a release if I'm not charging?

Hi everyone!

For the past few months I have been doing free photo shoots for families, seniors, engagements, babies, etc... to build a portfolio.
I haven't made them sign any contracts or release forms because I assume that if I'm not charging it is unnecessary but I really have no idea.
Could anyone please help me out and tell me what the right thing to do is?

Whether or not you are charging for your photography has nothing to do with the clients' rights to publicity, etc.

In short, if you're using the images for any sort of promotion, you need releases.

Thanks so much Jim! Should I just look up templates online or is there a specific one that I should be looking for?
Do you have any suggestions?

On a more serious note. Photo Attorney has a forms package.

The book "Legal Form for Photographers" comes with a CD of forms you can edit.

Yeah I like the sarcasm

One more question. After they sign this and we do their photo shoot and all, they can print pictures and give them to family etc right?

Depends on whether you give them the license to do so.
