I got sick of looking at the old canon Fd lenses in the drawer that won't fit the t1i. I ordered an fd to eos adapter from amazon. It worked pretty well for what it cost. My old 50mm lens weighs twice what the 18-55mm kit lens does, easily. Same for my 28mm lens. The one I really want to use it for - the 80-200mm zoom is an off brand (lentar) and the tolerance is too close. It won't lock on. I was disappointed in that one. I do have a Phoenix 100-500mm zoom, but the thing is so big and heavy (almost a foot long and not quite 3.5" diameter), that even with the lens mounted on a tripod - as it has it's own tripod screw, it's a beast, and almost unusable. The optics aren't bad, though, so if you can get it to settle down and behave it's not a terrible lens. It should come with a rolling carrying case.
The adapter forces me to go old school though - manual everything, although the in camera light meter is a big help. You have to either remember to focus, compose, and then lock the aperture down and adjust the exposure, or just leave the aperture closed on your chosen f setting the whole time. It's fun to play with old lenses, but I wouldn't consider it to be something I could use in a situation where I would want to change lenses quickly. It's a pain to line up the mechanical linkage with the aperture lever in the lens, if you don't do it right, it forces the aperture to it's most closed position. Now I have to pull out that nifty fifty and challenge myself to go manual. I usually use shutter or aperture priority most of the time. Anyway, just something fun to play with, probably the cheapest camera accessory I could buy right now. I really do want a wider range "walking around" lens - say 20-150mm or something. I'll have to see what the summer brings. |
