For advertising, you`ll need a model release from the client. What did you sign in the contract (did they even sign a contract of some sort?)

to be safe a model release...at a minimum, ask their permission before you display any images for self promotion purposes

You should have it written into your terms and conditions that you can use the images for "self promotion".

In the UK a portrait shoot comes under the "private and domestic" clause of the copyright act and although the photographer retains copyright, the client has the right to NOT have the images displayed elsewhere. Hence the clause in the t&c's.

You should always ask your client if it's okay to use their likeness for you business/marketing use, and get it writing. I have a simple yes/no box in my contract, simple, and complete.
