Thumbs up Supermoon - Saturday March 19, 2011

For those who like to shoot the Moon.... mark your calendars, get your cameras ready and get your locations scouted out because this Saturday we will have a Supermoon!!!

From Moongiant:

March 19th Supermoon!
What is a Supermoon? Also known as a Lunar Perigee, it's when the Moon reaches it's closest point to earth in it's orbit. On Saturday, March 19 the Moon will be at it's closest point to earth in 18 years.

There's allot of speculation on the effects this has on earth such earthquakes, volcanic activity and tidal waves. But one thing is for sure, this Saturday the Moon will be bigger and brighter than it has it 18 years. So set the night sky above to March 19th and get ready for a great night of Moon watching!

Practicing my moon shots in anticipation of upcoming Supermoon on Saturday. I followed the instructions from this post (big thanks to Arlon for sharing tips) How I shoot the moon..

Of course being the super noob that I am, I forgot to check every setting and had the White Balance set to incandescent .... DOH! Oh well... even so, I'm happy with the photo..... it's leaps and bounds better than the moon shots I took last month that came out looking like nothing but a big white blob.

Thanks so much Last month I tried to shoot the full moon based on my own "thoughts" of what would be correct and of course I was all wrong. The pics looked like big white glowing blobs.. LOL!!! Arlon's thread really helped.... who knew the key was going for underexposed??? (well apparently Arlon knew.... thank goodness )

I've only been a member here for about a month... but already I'm learning so much from you all. Many thanks

We have a forecast of cloud and light rain
And my zoom doesn't go far enough anyway.
I'll just have to wait and see what the clever DPS'ers can come up with.

Great practice shot, Gulfcoastgirl!

Me too... I'll be waiting to see what the clever DPS'ers come up with. I'm about a million miles away from having a clue when it comes to photography.... but I'll get there one day....... baby steps.

Thanks for the compliment
