Default TAFE course

Hello everyone. I have enrolled in two TAFE courses for special event photography as well as advanced photography techniques. They are run once every term depending on numbers i think. Anyway, cutting to the chase i enrolled and paid $135.00 for each course mid last year and they have been cancelled several times due to lack of numbers. Although i have been offered a refund from TAFE i would really like to do the courses so here is a shout out to anyone thinking about doing these courses (in Campbelltown NSW). Please please please have a go and we can meet some DPS'ers in the process!

Thanks everyone.

What "advanced photography techniques"? And what kind of special events?

I learned everything from trying, and from reading. No "classes" here.

Yeah, i hear you, i have also learned a lot from trial and error. What i guess i'm trying to do is to see how other people do things. I know i don't have to pay for this but sometimes someone else has a better (easier) way of achieving a result. The special event course aparently teaches you how to pose people amongst other things. Sometimes listening to another person's opinion gives you ideas to try yourself. I love experimenting with the camera, part of the reason to do the course.

We're all very very proud of you Os, well done you're amazing. Here's a cookie. Glad you were able to contribute to the OP's question/issue.

OP - good luck trying to find some more course members. Hopefully it'll be worth your while. Though a link to the courses might help others who might be interested finding out more about the courses.

Fuzzy: I wasn't intending to brag. There's no need for classes for that kind of subject matter. Certain things I couldnt understand, especially if they're particularly work-intensive (studio, landscape, etc) but for events? Really not that hard. It's also less about photography and more about social skills: If you can take great photos but are socially awkward, you won't have much success.

And what better way to work on being more comfortable socially than having a group of subjects in a similar "boat" to you to try out on?

Well, OP, if I was in NSW I would jump at it, unfortunately I'm the other side of the world. But if my lottery numbers come out (and I'm not informed by someone in Nairobi who can send me the money if I only deposit £10000 in their personal account...) I'll be sure to sign-up. Some of the other modules look interesting too. I'm thinking of doing a Open University course (distance learning) soon, but it is pretty general and you probably don't get the benefit of meeting people.

Maybe if people aren't biting you could get you money back and get in contact with a local photography interest group who might be able to help you with these specific areas. Sometimes our local group (not got up the courage to go myself yet, I'm scared it's going to be full of grumpy old pro's who wonder what all us young wannabes are wasting our time for) go to events held by other interest groups and photograph what they're doing.

I'd love to take the classes, really would except:

1) Campbelltown is a bit too far for me to get to (I live in Darlinghurst);

2) I suck and need beginners' classes and am possibly years away from advanced;

Have you thought about going to Sydney for the classes?

Check out the Australian Centre for Photography in Paddington (ATP). I've been looking at their workshops and stuff and albeit quite a bit more expensive, may prove to be really good. I'd love to take those classes but am short of funds at the moment.

In Australia, we have a technical college system we refer to as TAFE - Technical and Further Education. These colleges are governent schools directed towards post high school trade and tertiary courses. They are highly regarded and offer an array of courses, many for low fees.

That said, to gain a certificate, diploma or degree in a course is an achievement, its not a mickey mouse " I taught myself" education.

Keep trying mate, I know that Padstow TAFE runs some photography courses, maybe trying the TAFE yearbook at the local newsagency will give you some leads.

If you want to travel to the Shire, try here: Sutherland Shire Photography - Digital photography classes - Wedding - Portrait - Events photographer - Sydney South.

Greg Ford is a mate of mine and a great teacher.

Cheers,

John W

You know what, at the moment i think doing the course somewhere closer to town won't really be an issue for me, i work nights and would have to have the time off work anyway. Maybe if there are a few people interested we could organize a course that is central to where everyone is coming from. i'll Google the ATP and have a look. If you are in Darlinghurst, I have organized to be off this saturday so i can go into town to shoot the sunset and city lights. At the moment there are only three people going including me. You would be most welcome to come if you feel like it, oh and nobody sucks at photography, it's just a different way of doing it. Some of the best photographs have been taken by accident!
