From a purely technical point of view, understanding exposure will help a lot.
This multi part tutorial, on this site, will assist. Exposure (1) A balancing act Although it was written with SLR in mind the same principals apply. The biggest difference is that it is very difficult to get shallow depth of field (zone of sharpness or DOF) with a P&S but very easy to get great DOF which can be advantage for some photographs. The other thing that is very handy is to know how to read a histogram. This will help. Understanding Histograms
