Default DPI Question

Hi
If I have a photo that is 180 DPI but for printing, it should be 300 DPI. If I simply resample
the photo from 180 to a resamples image of 300, will that improve the print quality or does the picture have to be retaken at a higher Res?

Thanks

Don't upsample it. Unless you know what you're doing, you'll make the image look much worse, and it's probably not necessary. The important thing for on screen display, and nearly all modern printers is the actual pixel dimensions. If you're printing an 8x10 image, and you want at least 300 dpi, then your pixel dimensions need to be at least 2400x3000. As long as you've got that you should be fine.

Also, assuming you're using photoshop, if you just want to change the file to say 300 dpi, uncheck the option to resize, and you can plug in whatever number you want without having any effect on the image.

DPI is meaningless: PPI (pixels per inch) is important.

DPI is a holdover from the print industry: it's not relevant to photography.
