Default not what I expected

I came to this site hoping to learn from experienced people, people who are like me and who LOVE to take pictures. I LOVE it!! It is one of my favorite hobbies!!

For christmas I upgraded from a point and shoot to a dslr and wanted to find a forum about photography.

I will say I am sorry I found this site!!

Most people who post here are just mean!! You ask a question they answer in a way makes makes you feel stupid because you are not as smart as them.. Sorry I thought this site was called digital photography school I thought I could learn something about photography here all I leanred and most of the members are assholes.

Well that is my vent,

Goodbye!!

You have painted a very GENERAL brush on everyone in this forum, with very GENERAL statements...Link to some of the personal examples you are railing about to give some weight & credibility to your statements. Yes we have some idiots on here, but I will tell you this from experience that no photography forum I have been on is free from those kinds of folks..If photography really is a passion, then learn to overlook those snide, rude comments & focus on the ones that are helpfull...

There are some jackasses here, as in life, which you will meet probably anywhere you go, but your broad generalization of this site as bad, is just not correct.

I looked at all the posts you made, and didn't see anyone responding to you in any type of deragatory way. As a matter of fact, on this thread, you are the one that comes across as the troll, and mean. What do you have to say about that? If you have a problem with a post, you can, A: report it by using that little red square on the top right corner of the offender's post, or B: If this person is constantly pissing you off, there is an ignore function in the user CP.
If you stick around long enough, you will see who to take serious, and who to ignore.

Vast majority of posts I've read on this forum have been positive and friendly and informative. This is one of the best forums I've ever visited actually. Also there's people from all around the world so there might be some cultural differences that some might interpret as an insult or something mean spirited even if the commenter had all the best intentions.

And it's good to grow a thick skin if you're gonna hang out in t3h almighty interwebz. Plus the interpipes are leaking to the real world so it doesn't hurt to have some tolerance against asshats in your day to day life.

Like sixfreds I am a newbie to DSLR photography.

The standard response on some of the Canon forums to what are seen as basic questions is RTFM. Can't say I've ever seen that response on here.

So agree with digirebelva and RLucas, stick around, ignore the snide comments and there is a lot to learn on here.

After all we didn't all spring from the womb as fully fledged photographers, and most people on here seem to realise that (although it must be quite exasperating at times to be asked something that seems very simple to you and has probably been asked many times before).

actually I don't post much really I only did ask 1 question and I did get a personal messgae back telling me how people like me shouldn't buy dslr cameras and all I did was ask how to take good action (sport) shots. I was told how dumb I am because why would I buy a camera when I was so stupid and couldn't use it.

On the forum it was said spend $1000 and you can get a good picture and there are ways to take good pictures without a $1000 lens I actually figured it out BUT really I am just looking for what setting and things to use. BUT whatever..
Thanks for the advice.

I read a LOT of the posts and there are more negative people, arrogant people NOT all BUT a lot of jerks on this site. Look around there are more negative and post that are like shots are us who aren't the best.

So maybe I am a troll, thanks!!

It's all a choice. You can choose to react to it, or you can choose to ignore it.
I prefer to skip the negative posts and move on to something that I will get something out off, so no thanks. I have been on several different forums in the past couple of years, and I can tell you now, that this is probably the friendliest site I have been on.
Like you, I don't care much for the RTFM statements either, but it is what it is.
I never said you were a troll. I just said that post came across that way.

On your sports thread, you could say thank you, but I am not looking for a lens. The thread would be bumped, and you may have gotten another response. BTW, he recommended anywhere between $600-$1000.

If there's a real problem with one person, I'd suggest (1) not giving up on the whole site because of it, and (2) contacting someone who might be able to help (Sime is DPS's Community Manager, for instance).

As RLucas and others pointed out, this is an Internet forum and people will run their mouths from time to time. All communities have this, and all Internet communities definitely have this. The good ones try to keep bad behavior in check so that it doesn't dominate the community, though, and I think DPS is pretty good.

It's probably worth considering as well that photography is a pretty subjective art. You'd be hard-pressed to find any interesting photography question where there aren't at least a couple different opinions about how to do "x" or whether the composition is better on this photo or that photo. The longer you work at photography, the more you'll come to understand that the more you learn, the more you realize you've still got more to learn, and you'll also come to understand that different people have different ideas about how to approach stuff, and that's a big part about what makes photography interesting. You'll see all those opinions reflected here -- hopefully in a respectful way.

Without knowing the specific incident that's made you upset, it's pretty hard to tell if you've been wronged. I can see at least four other people (so far) from this site that look like they'd like to see DPS treat all its members well, but I'm afraid I still don't know what's reall wrong. Can you throw us a clue?

I'm an asshole.

You can blame it on me.

I'm an easy target for scape goating.
