Default To bring or to not bring?

In a few weeks I will be traveling for 3 days for work (not photography related). I am not sure how much free time I would get after work but I am trying to decide if I want to bring my camera and a few lenses with. The city I am going to, I have never seen in person but its really supposed to be a work trip. Plus I am not sure if they would like me putting extra miles on the rental car. Any thoughts?

Do it! My husband went to NYC last August for work related training and I really regret not sending him with a camera. He was done by 4-5 pm every day and spent the rest of the night exploring and doing touristy things. Unfortunately the only thing he has to show for it are some crappy iPhone pictures.

Take the camera.
There are those very early morning shots and possible the evening/night shots.

The times you dont have a camera are the times you need it. Its better to have and not need than need and not have

I had a for-work related trip to Southern California a couple of years ago, where I was 9AM-6PM M-F and 9AM-5PM Saturday, and home the next Monday. I knew I'd only have 1 day to myself, but still managed to not only squeeze in some photography time, but time to meet up with a friend. I even debated not doing the "Marine Wildlife tour," and then decided I'd never have another opportunity like that again - it turned out to be the perfect day to go out, one of my most incredible experiences ever, and certainly the best $30 I've yet spent

If you don't take them, you'll regret later it.

I'm off to Paris on Wednesday for work.. You can bet your last dollar that I'll be taking my dSLR AND my P&S. The extra weight and hassle is definitely worth the opportunity. Especially since I'll be in central Paris and have a couple of evenings to myself.. Watch this site for night photos of the Arc de Triomphe, Eiffel Tower, Louvre etc.

Take your camera, nothing says you HAVE to use it, but if you don't have it, you CAN'T use it!

Heck, I was specifically told to leave my camera at home for my next CO trip, because there are no trips beyond "house to hot tub" involved, and I'm still going to sneak my P&S with me

No one gives a hoot about miles on a rental car..... they are included in the price. The only thing they could complain about is gas... but honestly... if you drove say 50 extra miles... no one is gonna notice. Drive the hell outta the car and get some good pics
