Hi guys.

Just wanted to give a quick hello to my new friends. My name is Steve, and I just bought my first SLR. Its the Nikon D3100.

If any of you have owned one of those small digital point/click cameras, then you are probably familiar with my disappointment of the picture quality. I suffered through one of those for several years, always wishing I had a 'real' camera. I never had enough money to spare on the luxury of a SLR, but I finally ended up with the opportunity to get one, and I can't put my satisfaction into words.

A few days ago, I took a couple quick shots of my kids, and the difference is almost immeasurable.

These few shots have caused a real desire to learn that camera inside and out, and start taking pictures that I can actually be proud to show others. So I started reading. And reading. And more reading.

I've learned alot so far, but to be honest, I'm scared to go out with the camera. I haven't taken many more pictures than the first few, because I'm kind of apprehensive that I'll end up being disappointed with results (normally not big deal for me, but I spent a good chunk of money, so the apprehension factor is a tad bigger). I'll get over that, I'm sure.

So I bought the D3100, it has a 18-55 lens (can't remember the aperture range at the moment), a tripod, a couple of filters, camera bag, cleaning kit, and a 55-200 telephoto lens.

Even though I'm apprehensive about it, I'm very anxious to get started. I've read so much from this site, and it's been incredibly helpful in teaching me photography basics.

So, thanks for the tips, and the website. Looking forward to getting to know you guys.

Best Regards,
wingflapp - Steve.

Of course, 15 minutes after posting this I realize there was a sticky that I should have used.

Blah.

Hi Steve, and welcome to DPS. Just start carrying your camera around with you wherever you go. Little by llittle you will warm up to picking it up and taking a shot, and that feeling will snowball. Have lots of fun.
