Default Music, Movies and Software

What are your views on pirated music, movies and software?
Do you pay for all your music, movies and software?
I have yet to talk to someone who hasn't acquired at least one of the three, at least once, in an underground manner.

What is the difference between stealing music, and stealing photos? How about software and photos? Movies?
I think that just about everyone here abhors the idea of stealing photographs, why don't you hate music, movie and software thieves with such a vengeance?
Do you think that your views would be different if you were, say, a musician instead of a photographer?

This topic has been on my mind for a while now, and has been sparked up again by the recent post about the Utah girl stealing photos. I often wonder if you who so hate photo thieves, hate thieving of all kinds, or just the thieving of your life's work...

Penny for your thoughts.

Personally I can't stand anyone who lies, cheats, or steals anything from anyone. Not saying I am perfect, although hubby calls me MS. Goody 2 Shoes. I am not all good, I got detention in high school, once, for not turning a library book in on time. I just like to be able to look my self in the mirror and la my head down at night with a clear conscience. I have a sister in law who whole life is basically a fraud.I could never live my life that way.

Well, you've just met one of who has not stolen any music, movies, photos, any sort of copyrighted or Intellectual Property materials off the net or anywhere. I buy apps and softwares. Not because I'm perfect or has deep moral values, it's because I have deep respect for artists or anyone's work, really, and that it's not hard to understand that these people make money off their work.

Granted sure, they have tons of money and may seem that stealing a song here and there, videos, won't affect them financially. Sure. But then when you have millions doing the same thing you are, then the numbers become staggering. This is why you can look around you and there is death of music recording studios, music and video retails. Pirating has done this much damage to the industries. For sure, though, the entertainment and art industry have to adapt to such changes where their work is now easily exposed and prone to be stolen and have to find ways to cope, protect and find new means and tactics to creating and selling work. But it still doesn't help that the reduction in sales has already impacted the quality of their work because they can't afford to hire the best technicians and tools anymore to produce their best work.

I used to work in the music industry, hence, I guess this is where my understanding and respect for artists' works stem from. But I don't think you need to work in such industries to understand the impact piracy creates.

No one wants their work stolen from them. This is where they make their living from, regardless how much or how little money they make. I guess people would only come to grasp the reality of the pain piracy creates until their own work is stolen from them.

Sad.

I live with a pirate. Usually of anime series, some music, and manga or books. ( Manga is graphic novels, or comic books if you will. Usually written by Japanese. They're actually quite interesting, once you figure out HOW to read them. ) He wanted a Kindle for the purpose that it would support many different types of files. He uses two programs for his pirating.

Me? If I want a song, I look it up on iTunes and pay for the download. If I want a book, I look it up on a local used books stores website. If not there, Amazon is my friend. Just received Light: Science & Magic from them. If I want to see a movie, I go to the theater, Pay Per View it, or visit a Redbox. If I want to own it, I buy it.

Oh, and the nice BMW I borrowed from some lady who left the keys in.......wait, that's a different story. Never mind.

Funny story, I know someone that got on a forum and actually asked how to get a serial for Photoshop. The follow-up comments were very "educational" for the person. I thought they were funny. Personally, I will use GIMP until I get good enough to purchase Photoshop which will not be any time in the near future.

My thought is that stealing is stealing. It doesn't matter what the choice of media is.
I know. Deep, huh?

But its not stealing - its a copyright violation. You still have the ownership of your goods. If they broke into your house and took your TV - THATS stealing. Making a copy of something... its a different beast.

Not saying its not wrong....

Arrghhhh! The Internet - All the Piracy, none of the Scurvy.
(funny shirt I saw somewhere).

Good to know that there are some good people out there.
My aunt and uncle pirate EVERYTHING. And an uncle on the other side pirates a lot of movies.
Christmas gifts are always illegal.

I get my music from a few sources:
1. Sharing with friends. I don't feel bad about swapping music that has been legally acquired.
2. Buying the hard copy, legally.
3. Free downloads from new/unpopular artists who want to spread their sound, like Pharmacine RX (one of the members is also my best friend ).
4. Music given to me by people (my dad) who may or may not have paid for it.

Software, well, I use open source programs mostly, but I got a trial for PS CS5 and my dad saw this and thought he would (ahem) "activate" it for me. (BTW, content-aware fill is NOT as awesome as it looks)

I don't really like movies, but if I find one that I really love, I will buy it. This has never happened though.
Rent movies from local places very rarely.

How do you feel about sharing music with friends? Wrong or right?
I feel like if it has been paid for in the first place, and it is only one copy, but... *shrug*
I wouldn't spread music that has been pirated, and not with internet "acquaintances", but I feel okay with some music swapping between close friends.
