Default This is so ridiculous.

I tried to make another gmail account yesterday, only to find out that I could not without giving google my cell phone number.
Not only do I not own a cell phone, but there is no way in hell that I would give my number to gmail.
And then I found out that gmail will be implementing a 2-step sign in feature, for "security".
Guess what? They want you F-ing cell phone number!!!!
If this passes and becomes a permanent feature, I am going to ditch google entirely.

Okay, I just had to rant.

Here's some links if you want to read more about it.

Except you need to get the verification code that they send to the number you give them...

I just created a new gmail account and the only place they asked for a phone number was as one of the possible security questions, you could put in your first telephone number, though, that was a choice among several options.

I have had them ask for my cell phone number for password recovery, and have always just skipped that question without any problem. I'm not sure why it would be forcing you to give up a cell phone number just to sign up.

With the amount of data mining that Google does, you can rest assured they already have your cell phone number.

Just another way to combat the 1000's of spammers using gmail, fear not google won't sell your number or call you..

Will Google keep or use my mobile phone number?

Google will not sell your personal information for marketing purposes without your permission, nor will we contact you using this number without your expressed permission. Google will only use your phone number to send you a verification code. We only store each phone number to make sure it is not being used to create or verify a large number of accounts. For more information, please review the Google Privacy Policy:
