My lovely brother gave me a polarising filter for my birthday.
Does any one have any suggestions of a little weekend project that would put it to good use?

A polarizing filter has the ability to block polarized light. To understand where it is useful you need to understand where you are likely to find that kind of light. Most reflected light is polarized. Got a reflection bouncing off the water? No problem; twist the polarizer and it's gone. (This is why good fishing sunglasses are polarized.) For some reason this does not apply to reflected light coming off metals.
There is also a band of polarized light in the sky at about 90 degrees from the sun. Imagine the sun directly overhead; the band of polarized light will run along the horizon. The best way to see this is just to try it. You'll notice it has no effect on the clouds but a quite profound effect on the blue sky, It can be quite dramatic Ansel Adams used to say that when he used his polarizer he would turn it until it looked good and then back off a bit. Apparently a little goes a long way.

You can get some pretty cool effects with a polarizing filter and a piece of plastic (and sometimes an LCD).
If you get a plastic bowl full of water and suds, it's even better. ![]() Check these out.
