Post IMG files

This is my first post so please bare this in mind if I have posted this question in the wrong place.
I have a Canon sx120 and when I download my photographs (into ZoomBrowzer which came on disc with my camera) they appear as "IMG" files which are not easy to view on most computers. Why dont they save as JPEG files as most computers are able to view this type of file?
Thanks in advance for any info on this query.
Bryan

Welcome to the forum.

I don't know for sure but I would guess that is the file extension for the RAW file from your camera, I would check your manual and see how you change the settings so the camera converts directly to jpg if that is what you prefer.

Maybe some one else who has the camera can answer this and tell you how (or if I'm even correct or not).

They should be JPG files with IMG filename prefix (e.g., IMG_0001.JPG).

Oops, I got that one wrong then. I thought the OP meant the extension was IMG.

Yep. I have the SX120, and that's how they are. I haven't seen any setting to change from jpeg to anything else in the camera. I don't use ZoomBrowser though so can't help with that.

OP your computer is probably set to hide extensions of known file types. If you change that it might help your question if you're able to post the extension. You can change it by opening any folder on your computer then depending on your Windows version XP- look across the top bar and click Tools->Folder Options->View, then look in the list for hide extensions for known file types and uncheck it. Click Apply at the bottom right, then Apply to All Folders at the top left of the Window. Vista/7- Click Organize->Folder and Search Options, from there the instructions are the same as above. Once you've made the cange you'll be able to see the extension of your files coming out of your camera. The files might be RAW files and Zoombrowser might not change it to jpg or tiff. If that's the case you could try to use Photoshop,Photoshop Elements, GIMP maybe to open your files and save them as JPG.

They ARE JPEG images.
