Default self-timer

using the nikon d3100, if you are using the timer, is there a way of setting the focus on your lens without a remote cable? Thanks!

If you can put something in place for you as a stand-in, you could set the focus on that item, flick the focus selector on the lens to manual (so the camera wouldn't try to re-focus) then take your spot with the timer active.

Otherwise, I don't think the camera has the ability to start the timer then focus just before the shot instead of focusing first, then running the timer.

What IABoomer said. But I'll also follow that up with a link to an article I always found useful: I’m ready for my closeup: 6 methods for perfectly focused self-portraits | Photodoto
