Default Photography Magazines?

I wanted to ask hubby to get me some subscriptions to a couple of photography magazines but not sure which ones are best. Some are geared more toward pros and I guess what I am looking for is just something for the beginner or average person.

Any suggestions?

Depends on what you want to read about. Gear? Art? the industry? There are also dedicated mags for different styles/genres: fashion, landscape, etc.

I don't think you'd be unhappy with Popular Photography. Each issue usually includes some tips, how to's, gear updates, and gear tests, and just the right amount of ads. I think it's kind of generic, and I enjoy and look forward to reading it every month

Digital Photo Magazine is pretty good as well and has a format similar to Popular Photography. I would go to a nearby Barnes and Noble or similar large bookstore and browse what they have. Several of the magazines from the UK also come with CDs of demos, tutorials and software. They're of mixed use to me and they're much more expensive, but they tend to have more content as opposed to ads.

PhotoPlus-Canon Edition if you are a Canon DSLR owner. Feb 2011 issue is on 'How to shoot Perfect Photo, SLR skills make simple'.

Digital Camera World. Jan 2011 issue: Perfect exposure everytime; Take creative shots at home.

Popular Photography- I recommend the 'How to' issues only.

I generally end up getting Practical Photography (prizes/xmas gifts etc).
What I have found is that most of these magazines often just repeat the same stuff. PPMag is good for some tutorials and photoshop bits. But I wouldn't buy more than a 12 month subscription.

For what you are looking for, Shutterbug could be recommended.

Shutterbug = Gear envy to the max.
Popular Photography = Boring after a while but great for photoshop tips and keeping up in the industry (the latest gets old after a while.)
Outdoor Photographer = Not just for outdoor photographer's, this magazine is my favorite for long car rides or even on the plane, it keeps me reading and is fascinating even on the second run-through.

Take what you can from this post! Please, no one take offensively as this is just my opinion.
