Hello,
I just moved there and have been here perhaps five months. You'd think I would know more places but I don't, amusingly I'll probably pick up some pointers from others that reply. My suggestions (is.gd is just a URL shortener and redirector): - White Point Gardens, also known as Battery Park (Google Maps: White Point Gardens, Charleston, SC - Google Maps History: Battery Park (Charleston) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) - Patriots Point where there is a US Navy Carrier and submarine on display which you can board. Additionally there are many guns and aircraft (Google Maps: Patriots Point Naval Museum, Patriots Point Road, Mount Pleasant, Charleston, SC - Google Maps Information: Patriots Point - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) - Arthur Ravenel Bridge, which can be seen from Patriots Point. Good photography opportunity by taking pictures from on top of the carrier at Patriots Point. May make a good night photography subject. Other than that, you can simply wander around in the old parts of downtown and absorb it. I always feel overwhelmed and never know what to take pictures of at this point. Having a GPS unit that understands one-way streets is critical if you're going to do this. The older streets are incredibly narrow, and some of those are tricky to get through at all, watch out for this when turning down streets. You may also see lost tourists driving down the wrong way on one of these. Something I have been meaning to do is track down the current locations where old pictures were taken and try to replicate the shot. Here is one of those old pictures: http://is.gd/veuqws Please note that police enforcement is fairly heavy handed here, however I don't think it's unfair in any way. In most places you can get away with 10MPH over but you won't get away with that here. I would be interested to see what you come up with, I guess I'm stuck in one of those "hey I live here I can take pictures any time" modes. Last edited by fire-eyes; 02-08-2011 at 08:54 PM. |

I like charleston, but I hate driving around and parking in charleston. It's awful, especially around the old slave market (intersection of market and king I think...) there is a public garage right around the corner that I usually use. Google "bubba gump shrimp" and it's directly behind that restaurant. Lots of good shops and eats right there. If you want to get people shopping or walking around that's a good place. If you have a long lens, you can get a good picture of the Yorktown aircraft carrier from the observation deck in the SC aquarium building, and its a good side view of the Arthur Ravenel bridge, which, when it opened, was the largest cable-stay bridge in the US.

Can't believe I forgot about patriots point. I spent the night on one of the carriers docked there when I was a kid, on a class trip. Also I love the bridge but will have to drop hubby on the side of the road because he hates that bridge and will freak if I take him over it.
I don't really care for traffic and parking issues either but it has been quite a while since I have been to Charleston and it is one of my favorite places. |
