A silly question, I know, but with the FANTASTIC photo's that I keep seeing on here, I'm just wondering how may of us are new to this, and how many of us have been at it for a while.
I'm new. I know my photo's aren't much, but I'm hoping to learn a lot from looking at the pics taken by those with more experience. I'm trying to do as may of the assignments as possible to help me learn more too. I'm loving using my camera, and hopefully it won't take me too long to get the hang of it. |

It's been a while.
I was new to it over 50 years ago, as a young teenager. I am still learning.

August of 2009 was the turning point for me. I was in to it a little when I was a teenager, but not like now. In 09', I received a DSLR as a gift and played around with it a little. It sat in the closet for a few months untouched, and for some reason I found this site. I am inspired daily by the quality of work I see around here. It is a great place to learn!

Photography-as in owning a camera and taking lots of pics-all of my life. You should see some of the scary ones that I took during school time in middle school and high school. Big hair. Crazy clothes....and why was I taking photos in school? Why was I not doing work?
Photography-as in trying to learn the hows and whys and being very interested in taking better photos-about 8 years. Photography-as in being successful with using a dslr, controling my lighting and environment, learning different techniques, etc-about a year. |

I was given my first camera at around seven years old, I don't really remember it. At eleven I was given an Agfa 35mm that used flash cubes, and I DO remember that one
At eighteen I bought my first SLR, a fully manual Canon, followed by the AE1 when it came out. I used that model up till four years ago when I bought a T2. Last January I went digital and never looked back.Every time I pick up the camera I am a new student. Those that believe that there is little to add to their years of experience are sadly lost. Even the newest photographer has the potential to teach those that have been shooting all their lives. To all you that are just getting entangled with this obsession we call photography, I welcome you, and offer my sympathy

Wow, I'm kinda surprised how 'new' some people are at this. I consider my self really new to this. Christmas 2009 is when I really started getting into photography when my wife gave me my first DSLR. Haven't looked back since
. I've alway been snap happy since a little kid. I didnt know how bad I was till I started learning what you can really do with a camera. I think when prices started coming down on the DSLR's is when more people started getting somewhat serious with their 'hobby'. I could'nt imagine learning all that I have with a SLR, just the cost of the film and developing is what always stopped me. Its so much easier snapping a pic, then getting immediate feedback from the LED to see what I've done wrong and gong from there. Getting books, online researching and forums like this one has really improved my abilities and I STILL have a long way to go. I feel I'm nowhere near the quality that I see on this site. The information that you can get here, the 'pro's' that are so willing to help you improve makes DPS the best forum of its kind. (and I've checked out other sites) I'm starting to ramble, so, yeah, I consider myself new to this.. and probably always will, lol.
