That's quite a broad concept. I really don't have a definite answer and I'm not sure that anybody will. It depends on who is looking at the photo and what they interpret from it.
Many people have different reasons for being in photography in the first place. It would be somewhat difficult to pinpoint what they are trying to portray through "photography" in general.

I'd show them a picture - that way I'd have a thousand words right?

German people are lucky: they can combine two or more words. If I were German, my answer for frydham's question would be "Weltanschauung"

To be honest, I don't really know what I would say either.

Interesting question for which I have no answer; for me each image has it's own message.
However, a picture should NOT be taken in an attempt to convey a thousand words...An image should be taken to convey one idea very clearly..so maybe an picture should be meant to convey only one word, but can be "worth" a thousand words (and mean different things to different people).
