Question Help! Shutter Priority Mode

I am a first time DSLR user and I am very confused. I have been trying to play with my shutter speed in shutter priority mode but all my pictures come out extreemly under exposed or flat out black. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. If it helps I own a Cannon EOS Rebel T2i or 550D and am shooting with an 18-55mm lense. Any advice is appreciated, please help! Thanks!

Is your ISO set to Auto? If the aperture maxes out (also controlled by the camera), then the ISO must also increase to a point where the exposure is good.

Posting a photo w/ EXIF is the best way for us to help you. Sounds like you're setting your shutter speed too high, and your aperture and ISO too low.

Or if its like my camera,..its because your not using flash. If I point mine at something dark, either it'll pop up a thing saying so,...or the flash or exposure comp will flash letting me know I need to change it. I know exactly what your talking about. When you get something like that,... try to fool with settings. Theres always the manual too. Usually as soon as I hit the button for the flash to pop up it goes away.

I don't know about Canons, but my Sony will make the aperture flash if it's out of range. You quite often get a guide too on the back, something like this:

That numbered line indicates the exposure over and under control, There's a similar one in the view finder that tells you whether the image is over/under exposed. The arrow wants to be in the middle (in this example).

Aha, like this:
