I currently use a Canon 450D as my main camera. My most used walk-around lens, is the kit lens that came with the camera (a 18-55mm IS), which has limited, hmm, pretty much everything, so I am considering an upgrade.
Now I am facing the choice of either upgrading to a better EF-S lens, an EF lens (because I would like to upgrade to full-frame later) or just going what-the-heck and getting the 5D mk II instead of waiting for the mk III as I had thought I would. For the EF-S lens I had considered the 15-88mm IS, for the EF lens the 24-105mm (Kinda limited on the wide angel on the x1.6 crop though), or just the 5D with the 24-105mm. Any thoughts?

I've been through a similar dilemma recently... and ended up with three related threads on the topic(s). As everyone else will tell you, you have to decide for yourself. But, since you asked for advice, here's mine...
I would suggest purchasing the best lens or lenses you can afford. The 450D is a fine camera that will do almost anything you want. No, it's not FF and the APS-C sensor does limit wide angle (unless you wanna spend major moola on a special lens). Even so, I'd still go with the lens. Buy the fastest lens you can afford in a focal length that suits your shooting style. Personally, I think a fast wide angle and the f/2.8 smaller zoom might work I am assuming is your style. That's just my .02 cents worth.

Thanks for your insights. I totally agree on getting the good glass, which is why I previously invested in a 100mm 2.8 macro lens which really performs
![]() I guess in my gadget mania I still went out at got the 5D with the 24-105mm f/4 lens. I don't think it'll let me do more, or take better pictures than my 450D has done, but it will give me an edge when it comes to indoor shooting and especially where flash is not an option, since the ISO performance is a lot better than the 450D.
