Default Blog promotion - What's worked for you?

I've tweaked my blog over the past couple weeks and am happily seeing some increase in traffic. I am wondering what things other DPS folks have done over time that has improved your traffic flow. I'm aware of the advice of good content, generating links from established blogs, etc.... As I look to improve my blog, I am certain there's good advice out there so I thought I'd ask! Thanks in advance for your thoughts & experiences.

Content and having the google robot crawl it. 70% of my traffic is from searches. Mostly people like how-to's.

1. Get off of blogspot. Having your own real webspace is cheap and it will stop your site from being blocked by many companies filters. A huge number of people surf from work. Make it easier for them. It will also allow you to optimize your site for speed and SEO.
2. Get rid of some of the side bar links. Having to many 'blog partners' can make you look like a link page to google.
3. Put a higher priority on your own blog. I shouldn't have to scroll way down the page to find your navigation bar. It should be first.
4. SEO, SEO and more SEO. When I search Blue Lion I find a photographer in Canada. You are on the 3rd page. When I search Dallas photography and photographer you are not in the first 10 pages.

Search Engine Optimization.

It's the process of making your page readable and favorable to search engines. I target Google specifically but there are many things that help with all search engines.

JML,
Thanks for the thoughts...already starting to implement some of them. As this is a learning experience for me, I appreciate your tips.
