Why Photography?

1) I can't whittle
2) I can't dance.
3) I can't sing.
4) Can't read a lick of music so playing a instrument is out of the question.
5) I kill every plant I try to grow.
6) It hurts my back way to much to work on cars.
7) To old for skateboarding.
8) Water skiing? Not a chance!! You don't want to see this Bod in a bathing suit!
9) Painting? I'm not Picasso for crying out loud!
10) Hands are to beat up & stiff for Magic tricks.

Well, there's my top 10 list. It was either beer drinking & chasing women or Photography. Women are thanking me every day now.

Dave, you mean you're not trying to get women by taking really flattering pictures of them?

Music is my first "hobby" (which is more of a career... albeit a poor paying one at the moment).

I have just always liked looking at pictures and wanting to be able to capture something like that. I really don't know where it came from. I never owned a camera until last spring when I went out and bought a cheap P&S (samsung s630). And now I've got a D40 and am loving it. I can't get enough.

Great thread, Kunal. I've found the collection of replies here to be very uplifting. Thank you all for sharing these stories.

My dad was always the family photographer, and at times he took some amazing pictures with an old Canon film SLR (older than I am and it still works!) I always thought those dials with all those numbers on the camera were neat, but way too technical for me.

A few years ago, he retired and decided he wanted to photograph birds. I thought he was nuts to shell out the money for a D1X and a 400mm f/2.8 (not that I knew what any of those numbers meant at the time).

A couple of years ago my wife bought a little point and shoot for me for Christmas. I spent forever picking it out, and we were excited to be able to take pictures at parties and on vacation. The film P&S just gathered dust because I hated dealing with the film, but I thought maybe I would use a digital camera a little more. That turned out to be one of the greatest understatements I've ever made.

Within a few months I was buying my D80, and among other trips I've been birding with my dad (I almost hate to admit how much fun it is). I think in retrospect I dearly needed a creative outlet, and photography has provided that perfectly. It's a joy to shoot, edit, and share with friends (especially those here) and family.

There were two reasons I got into photography. First one: when I was 15, I discovered I could get into concerts for free if I had a camera and took pics. I also got to hang out in the stage pit, so I got a totally uninterrupted view every time
Second reason: I've always enjoyed art, but I suck at drawing and painting. This is when I started doing a lot of abstract shots.

If I have to be serious, this is probably as close as I can get to a real explanation. Thanks Liz, for speaking my mind.
