Wow, surprised no one has responded to this yet.
First, welcome to DPS! Start with the kit lens, and get to know how to use the camera with that. I will tell you though, that I wish I had gone with something more telephoto than the 18-55mm that came with my D3100. I've noticed that for the type of photography that I do most of the time, I need something that can zoom in further than my current lens. It really depends on what type of photography your looking to get into. If you want to go portrait/ kinda macro, a nifty fifty is a good choice. If you want a full range for landscapes or cityscapes, an 18-200mm might be good for you. Its all relative to what you enjoy shooting.
