i am looking for advice on the best web based photo back up service. i have a mac book pro, but time machine isn't compatible our wireless airport extreme. my hubby doesn't want to use time capsule because he heard it breaks alot??
anyway, aren't there web sites that will essentially do the same thing? copy all your photo files every so often and back it up off site for you? i need at least one terabyte. thanks in advance! |

One of the big names is Carbonite. It's $55 per year for unlimited storage. I've never used it, so I can't vouch for it personally.
Bear in mind that this is a straight backup, not archiving. They only keep the latest version of each file. |

They also (as I just found out looking into it) do not backup your external hard drives.

Why not just upload full jpegs to a PRO Flickr account? It costs $25 a year and you can upload as much as you want. You can keep photos private or let them be public.

I cant speak for the author, but Time Machine is great for backups, but thats all its good for. The author is looking for offsite backup, which is what will save you if you have a house fire or robbery. Which is essential in my opinion. I dont think I could live with myself if I lost all of my families memories because i didnt properly plan for a disaster like i said earlier. I mean even if its just backing up to a external HD that you swap between another HD in a safety deposit box or your office. But thats just me and my paranoia

I have the same setup and TimeMachine works fine with a 1.5 TB drive. What exactly is the problem? |

Actually, if they were looking specifically for an off-site backup, then the thought that Time Machine wouldn't work with their Airport Extreme would be completely irrelevant. That said, rotation off-site backups using a hard drive and a safety deposit box or friends house is more effective, or at least more efficient than a cloud backup for a large catalog of images. |

I use Mozy backup. As Jim said, yes they are extremely slow. I had 50gig to back up, which took around 20-25 days. I have 3mbps connection and I had the backup running for almost 10hrs every night.
Point to note is it takes very long when you doing it first time, after that it checks for changes and takes backup. Plus it is not a "true" backup service (even Carbonite). |
