One of mine is to "read the light" better. What my eyes see as quite a brightly lit scene - my livingroom with all the lights on for example the camera selects a really slow speed regardless of how I up the ISO. I tend to carry on regardless and shoot in all conditions although I do know that its much more flattering for portraits to find some open shade but if its a case of getting "the shot" I don't always follow that rule. Some nice reflectors will come in useful with a bit of practice and a patient guinea pig aka willing model.
Another goal is to invest in a faster lens. Right now I have 2 opposite extremes I have a zoom with is as slow as watching paint dry (3.5-6.3) and a 50m 1.8 and I get so frustrated because I am used to using a long lens, hanging back and zooming in but when I use the 50mm I have to get so close and sometimes too close and I cut off fingers and feet or so far back the photos just looks like regular snaps! What about you? What are your goals?

This next year is all about access. I want to gain access to otherwise restricted places for Urbex photography.
I am too old for all that sneaking around so I have to be a better politician than the young kids doing it. I am twice their age but I know I can still get the shots without getting myself killed. I want in on this because I know it will open a totally new realm of my photography. This will officially put me solidly into the fine art photography arena. I am always drawn to shoot pics of the not so pretty and find the beauty in it. So I am sure I will be right at home the first time I get into an abandoned asylum, hospital, or manufacturing facility.

Thanks for sharing Rachel!
I think my main goal for 2011 will be to better master both the technical side of my relatively new 100mm Macro Lens as well as the composition issues that come with macro work. Since I am a nature photographer by style, I am looking forward to exploring the worlds of "bugs and blossoms" more fully this spring and summer. A secondary goal is to learn/develop some new PP techniques to add a more creative bent to some of my work by adding texturing and a more painterly feel to some of the images I sell as greeting cards. here's a thread I started that shares some of my early efforts...... More fun with Texturing..... I am looking forward to see what's on other people's minds for 2011!

My goal is to practice practice practice my portrait photography. In the past year of taking ( practice) photos for people other than my kids, I have found that I most enjoy working with the babies and the teenagers. So I want to narrow in on those areas and try to be the best that I can be.

My goal is to keep learning, and to get out of my house and go to interesting places. I will take pictures of anything that is not two legged (I don't do people), so I'm going to keep exploring my area and learning my camera. I also plan to learn Photoshop Elements, beyond the very basics that I know.

I have a couple + of books and brochures on the back-burner that I need to complete.
Now that I have a macro/portrait lens I want to take some super shots as well as additional portraits. Landscapes and city-scapes are my favorite and I am planning a few trips to places with spectacular photo-ops. I have not done much painting because of my passion for photography. Therefore, I want to balance the time better. |

Hmmm.
1. Cut dog sport events from 59 in 2010 to 25-30 in 2011 (I have 18 booked now and 5 for 2012). 2. Average two portrait sessions per week. 3. Take at least one weekend per month (average) off completely. 4. Get back out into nature once a week. |
