Smile How do you define Photographer?

I just read a thread where someone was ranting about anyone with a DSLR calling themselves a photographer. I am curious if there is some unspoken standard in the photography world that one must own a certain number of gadgets and accessories in order to call themselves a Photographer?

I own a Canon EOS Rebel with an 18-55mm lens and a set of micro filters. At this point it's all I've been able to afford. And though I haven't set up an official business yet (if I ever do) I feel I am an official Photographer.

I don't have lots of equipment but I feel I have the ability to make good pictures out of what I'm given, with natural light, unique angles, post processing and so forth. Does it really matter to other photographers and/or clients how and with what materials the image is acquired?

Does it really matter? A photographer is a person who takes pictures, judging from your FlickR and other web site, you take pictures. However, there are various levels of photographers: novice, amerture, emerging pro and professionals. But, you're right, everyone with a dSLR consider themselves a photographer. If you gave a dSLR to a gorilla, set on 'P' and it takes a picture, then it would be a photographer too. I know...I've met photographers who must have been related to that gorilla. See how easy taking pictures have become with digital technology?

Sorry to be repetitive nick. Is there a way to search the forum? It's likely right in front of me but I can't see a search bar.

There's a link called "Search" in one of the top bars above the thread/forum.
