Default So Stupid!

I ordered what I thought was a book about how to use my speedlite. I just got it today.
It's a DVD.
By the time I pay to send it back then pay shipping again, I will have more in shipping than the DVD is worth. So I might as well keep it and watch it.
I really really prefer books though. Get out my highlighters and sticky notes and I can go to town with one of these "how to" books. Can't do that with a DVD.
I am kind of mad at myself. Need to pay better attention!

I'd personally just use Google instead of spending money on books (or DVDs). There's mountains of free information on the internet.

Been there done that. At least you didn't buy a book/DVD you already own. (facehands). OTOH, I loved the Strobist DVD, since it made some things much clearer (like the actual amount of space needed between a subject and a background to get lighting zone separation) that just wasn't getting communicated to me via text and lighting diagrams.

Nick--that only works if you have heaping great gobs of google-fu. Some folks have never once clicked on that Advanced Search Tips link. There's also a ton of crap misinformation out there on the interwebz, too.

I am a book learning. I like having everything that I need to know in one spot where I can reference it as needed.
I use the net to research simple information but for more complex things, I need a book. I get lost finding one piece of information here and another piece of information there.

I didn't know the strobist had a dvd. I'll have to look into that.

Download Kindle for your PC (or similar software). 100's of 1000's of free books, and most books, especially how-to books about a dollar or two.

Not sure I would like the looks of the screen, after the highlighter was used on the first page....

Sorry, couldnt resist. {shoulder shrug with silly gin}

I feel for you Nicole. I was actually thinking today, we are slowly losing the comfort of curling up with a good, paper page, book.....there is something to be said for that....

I like books too Nicole. I just recently bought two new to me ones. (used book store) The kindle thing is a good idea,.. but a book can be more practical at times. You dont need battery power to read a book, or an internet connection to acquire them, or strain your eyes in the mid-day sun to read them off of a glaring screen. Just a comfy spot, a nice drink, and maybe a pair of sunglasses/soft blanket. That and I just LOVE the smell of books and coffee. That should be a candle scent. Bookstore coffee shop. Something about the smell of aging paper that just relaxes you.

I used to think that way until I got my Kindle. I've never had the battery run out in the middle of the book, I never have to worry about the wind flipping my pages when I'm reading outside, the screen really doesn't have a glare (and I read in full sunlight a lot), and in fact, there have been several occasions where I tried to turn the kindle page. And in all honesty, now I don't have to walk to the bookstore to get a book if I finish one in the middle of a walk. Now I can just get a new one right away (meanwhile, that's kind of a bad thing for a book addict... constant, instant supply). I love books, and I'm totally a kindle convert (course, that doesn't mean I don't read paper, it actually just means I read a lot more).
