One of my clients wants me to photograph her wedding in Cabo, Mexico. Is it safe?
Is there anybody who has visited the place recently? Thanks!

Unfortunately a symptom of the times we live in is that the media can and will make any place sound unsafe if they get the excuse.
Last year, during the anti-government protests here in Thailand, various embassies declared Thailand to be unsafe for travel, at least one actually had it listed as the 5th most dangerous country in the world!!! This is all because of media exaggeration and exploitation of the situation to make headlines. Believe me, I live here and there was never any danger to anyone not directly involved in illegal activities. The sad part is the scaremongering by the international press has cost the country a fortune in lost tourism revenue which will take a long time to get back. The knock on effect means it has cost the people that need it the most, the workers in the industry, money out of their pockets. What I'm trying to say is any where in the world can be dangerous if you have no regard for your surroundings, and any where in the world can be safe if you use common sense. Go, shoot the wedding for your clients (do you really think they would have booked their wedding in the middle of a war zone or something?) and have a great time while you're there. PS. Sorry for the rant but I hate the way the press is gradually making everyone scared to step foot out of their own front door.

I know there is a lot of dangerous places everywhere in the world, even here in the U.S. where it suposed to be safe, there are lot of cities and places you should stay away from, like St. Louis which has been declared as the most dangerous city in the country with a violent crime happening every 10 minutes. México is not the exception and more these days with the problems my country is facing (I am from México) because of the drug dealing cartels war, this is a reality but the press and the media makes the things to look a lot worse because the bad news sells more for them. There are more safe places in the country than dangerous ones, in fact you can count only like 5 or 6 cities that are dangerous and 2 or 3 that you should stay away from: Cd. Juarez Chihuahua, Creel Chihuahua and Culiacán Sinaloa, which obviously are not tourist destinations. I must say, México City is named as the safest city in the Country. I lived for over 38 years in México City and never suffered any assault, robery or any kind of violence, two years ago I moved to California because of my work, but I´ve been at México for vacations 4 o 5 times since then, and still nothing happened to me or my family. It is like the bad press Colombia got on the early 90s, everybody thought that country was like the world´s most dangerous, but nothing to do with it. I went to Bogotá and Medellín plenty of times in business trips and the only thing I saw were two beautiful cities and a gorgeous country, full of kind and very nice people. Sorry for all this writing, but I wanted to express my oppinion and let you know Henry that I am 100% agree with you mate. Cheers! Last edited by Rehesan; 12-15-2010 at 05:34 AM. |
