I just found Dave Black's website and hot damned if that guy doesn't do totally killer work!!

So, am I insane to be seriously contemplating getting a slew of SB900's and ditching the Alien Bees?

Hell, anything I purchase is a tax write-off!!

Having worked with a slew of SB-800/-900s in both location and studio work, they certainly have their uses!

That said, unless I'm shooting fast action, I'll never go back to SB-x00s for studio. I still have a few SB-900s for on-location work where I can't get the ABs to conveniently.

Dave Black is awesome. Did you see his motocross work? I wasn't so thrilled with most of the surfing photos. He's got a lot of BTS videos of his shoots.

Yea, I've been watching a lot of his videos and reading his website.

I might be more interested in this setup because I'd like to start doing stuff during the day and not have blown out skies and still use my flashes. Plus, lugging my AB800's around is a pain especially if there isn't an outlet near by. PLUS!! Having the ability to change light output from the camera instead of running 100 yards each time would save me a LOT of time.

For my work there seems to be a lot of advantages for me.

Yep, they are great for that. Another option is the Cyber Commander for the ABs to allow control from the camera, but you're still stuck with a 1/250 sync speed that way.

I'm probably going to sell off my studio strobes...I just don't use them enough. Hell, I don't use all of the other strobes I have enough either but at least they don't eat up a room in my house....

I find I can do plenty with the flash units I have:
1x sb800, 2x sb600, 1x SU800 and 2x SBR200's (R1C1 kit)...

fantastic work by D.Black .I only received my sb 900 two days ago which i bought to use in my surfing shots to give some fill light .I had no idear if this would work ,now that i have seen his pictures i am eager to get out and give it a try (my set up will be very basic ).the problem i have is the sun is behind the surfer and i loose all detail of the surfer,s face .
The surf break is only 30-50 metres from the rocks so i hope the sb900 in zoom mode will work enough to fix this problem. Thanks for the link Eric you just made my day

To have any chance you'll probably need a "better beamer" attachment
