Default Why do Seniors need photos?

Hi all
Please excuse my ignorance but not being from the States, I just wondered about the Senior shoots that I'm seeing a lot of on DPS. I assume these are high school seniors? Do they need to have shots for a specific reason like a yearbook or something or is it just that they like to have a momento to mark their last year in school? The first time I opened a post titled Senior Photo Shoot I expected to see senior citizens!

It's because people think they'll have fond memories of High School years down the line and want something nice to look at when they open the year book a decade or so down the line. I'm only six years out and I'm already generally indifferent about what I care to remember and wouldn't be bothered if I ever discovered how much I've forgotten.

I don't even know where my yearbooks are anymore.

I wish there was more awareness about it in NZ/OZ.
Nobody (except photographers) really know about it.. much like engagement sessions and Trash the dress.. the majority have never heard of it.

They don't NEED them, they want them.

Some clever marketing by some photographer or other years ago no doubt who managed to persuade the parents of someone that they really really really should have pictures of their lovely little Johnny Junior as he finished High School.

It took me a while to get past that image in my head too!!

I was thinking about this the other day. First we had wedding photography, then engagements, maternity, newborn, seniors, and now there seems to be a growing market for funerals and delivery room photography. Do we need every moment of our lives documented for posterity? Are we worried that if there's not picture, it didn't happen??

Check out these two.. I think they're revolutionizing the genre...

Michelle Moore Seattle Fashion & Senior Portrait Photographer

I think this style of hip, young, modern style of senior portraiture (no 80's style sitting on a chair showing your senior ring!) is new enough that if you're smart, you can corner the market in your area (in the US at least!)

It seems to me that it was about the time that I graduated that you started to see something more with the senior photos, other than the cap & gown, drape for the girls, suit for the boys. That was back in the early 90's. Mine were pretty neat. They were done in a studio, but I wore several different outfits and they posed me all over the floor and stuff. All of the "cool" people had their photos done at the same studio. They were and still are really good. In fact, that is where my son's were done. Same place as mine.
I think it is more about memorializing that milestone. Graduating from high school. Just like getting baby's 1st birthday pictures. Big deal. At least in the US it is.

They are certainly nice photos but to me it seems that those photos aren't really about graduating, graduating was just the excuse for a glamour shoot. Anyone looking at those (without being told) would not guess in a million years that those are "Senior" photos.

Well done to the photog, I bet they make a motza.

we don't even do halloween (the shops are all pushing it bigtime, theres $$ in it for them)
the only halloween coverage i saw in the news was that the cops got called because some teenagers were threatening people into giving them candy.
different cultures.
