Default to sell, or to keep.

Hey all.

just then i ordered the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM. which will be (and is) a top lens. I also have the Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS II USM which means i will now have 24-200mm in f/2.8, which leaves me wondering if i shall ever really use my 24-105mm f4L. So, i was wondering does anyone else own the two f2.8 lenses and also still have a 24-105 f4L, and use it ?

thanks.

I couldn't begin to tell you about this, as I own no f/2.8 zooms (I prefer f/2 primes ), but the one thing the 24-105L might still be useful for is as a travel lens. It's still smaller and lighter and has a bigger range than the 24-70, and it's still got IS while the 24-70 has none. If you like shooting architecture and streets at sunset or in the dark, the 24-105 might still be the better tool. But that's me. I just got my 5D2, and have fallen in love with my 24-105 all over again, shooting in the dark with it.

5D2, 24-105L, @24mm. iso 6400. f/4. 0.3s handheld.

My personal inclination, if I didn't have to sell the 24-105 to fund the 24-70, would be to simply wait and see if it gathers dust. If it does, then sell the 24-105. If it doesn't, then keep it.

just looked at your equipment list... as good as primes are, for the moment it's just more of a hassel, i don't think it would work all that great shooting a wedding with primes.. i'd spend more time swapping lens than smashing the shutter release

This is where my being a hobbyist photographer, never planning to go pro comes in. Nobody pays me to shoot, so I can use PITA lenses (and screw up) all I please. I'm just shooting for me. I use the 135L, a C/Y Zeiss Planar 100/2, and a Leica-R 35/2. When I need to go fast [grin], I grab my tiny little OM Zuiko 50mm f/1.2. Not only are the last three lenses primes, they are manual-focus adapted primes. As I've claimed repeatedly on this board, I am very weird. But I think it works for me.

yea, thats the thing, shooting for yourself is a whole different ball game aye, when me and my boss do a wedding we have 2x 5d2's and a 1ds3, 2x 580exII's and a 430exII.. and that still not enough to have every lens quick enough.

Yup. I have noted that the pro photographers who are nuts enough to use adapted manual focus lenses are typically landscape or architecture shooters. Event shooting is a whole 'nother ball game, as you say. How one stays frosty and on your toes for that long, I cannot begin to fathom.

I had the 24-105 f4L IS and sold it in order to buy the 24-70mm f/2.8L. I bought it for indoor event shooting and it's a great lens for that.

For a general purpose walk around lens I really miss the 24-105. I miss the IS and the extra reach and lighter weight.

I will probably buy the 24-105 again. But the 5D MII is next on the wish list.

If you can stomach refurbs and only a 90 day warranty, and have an old busted Canon of any kind (film or digital, P&S or SLR) or snag a broken one off the 'bay or Craig's List, keep an eye on this thread at PoTN. As of now, the 5D2 is not on the CLP list, but that's what I was told when I first called to try and get one, and then three weeks later someone posted in that thread that it was back on the list. Which is how I got one for $1800 (it was at $1700 when the 5D2 was last on the list). $800 goes a long way towards a 24-105L.

CLP prices are typically the refurb price on the Canon website with an additional 20% discount, and then add sales tax. Sadly, this is USA only.

yea... it gets a bit like that after a while. luckily he mostly only gets me to shoot with him from the cermemony onwards, non of the prep, getting dressed stuff; that, would make it hell. Although... 16 hour shifts as an industrial electrician take their toll too...

but yea. silly idea to consider selling it haha, but on the same token, i don't want to see it collection dust, maybe i should book a holiday ???
