First, I want to apologize for making you guys read through all this insanity. I know there have been plenty of questions about whether or not to take a dslr on trips and I would really appreciate any advice on my particular situation...
I will be going on a trip to south asia for about a month and a half. The trip is more about visiting family then it is about sightseeing/photography. I usually go there every couple of years but I've never been there as a tourist (i.e. I've never walked around with a camera in my hand and have always tried to avoid causing any attraction to myself for fear of being robbed/ripped off/etc.). The last time I went, by the grace of God, we narrowly escaped being robbed at gun point right in front of our house!!! My family who lives there have told me that the conditions have gotten worse since I last went to the point where, on several occasions, my cousins' have been robbed at gun point in open daylight. This is why I hesitate to take my dslr. However, my cousin is getting married when I will be visiting. In addition to having a professional photographer, he has asked my sister and I to take some pics during his wedding since he was impressed with some of our europe vacation pics. The thing is that the pics he saw were from my p&s sd790is and not my dslr. Although I'm quite happy with my sd790is, I've noticed that I haven't been able to get good indoor low light shots from the camera and the wedding will most probably be indoors w/low light. Also the lack of manual controls might limit my creativity. Apart from the wedding, I do hope to take some street shots discreetly, if possible. Here are my options: 1) Suck it up and take my dslr, one zoom lens, and sd790is.... - note that if this option is chosen, i will only use it for the wedding, so is it worth losing precious luggage space? 2) Only take the sd790is and live with the noise and occasional blur - note that if this option is chosen, chances are I will have to share this camera with approximately 3-4 other people during my trip and suffer the heart palpitations experienced by camera-less photographers surrounded by several photo ops 3) Use this situation to justify the purchase of a higher end portable p&s like an s95 (or similar) with raw capability and manual controls (which I have read all the reviews for and understand that the image quality produced by a dslr in low light/indoor will never compare to a p&s) and take the sd790is as well. Thanks in advance!!! Last edited by clickster; 11-07-2010 at 07:23 PM. |

4) Buy a u4/3 or Sony NEX and have DSLR ability in a looks like a P&S body, give the SD790is to the significant others.

Take the dSLR for the wedding, but leave it packed away and out of sight afterwards.
Where the hell are you going?!

Either what OS said, or buy a Canon G camera.

Thanks for the responses guys!
@jml79 - I like the way you think, might need to adjust my budget for those camera's though...I will look into it @OsmosisStudios - I'll be headed to the "not so good" parts of Pakistan...I might also visit some remote areas that were affected by the floods...I just need to think of where I can safely put away my camera when not in use @Jonbar18 - thanks for your suggestion....I've looked into the canon g series but if I decide to go the route of an un-pocketable p&s, I was leaning toward the lumix lx5 (i think the faster lens will perform better in low-light conditions) |
