Funny, I enjoy putting pressure on wedding photographers by letting them see me working the floor with my camera. I should bust out some reflectors next time too.

When I pulled up I had noticed that there was a 'rent a cop' (no offense) car sitting there and I could hear the guys talking, but they weren't visable at that point and I didn't think much about it.

I had just finished reading an online photogtraphy lesson that day and was concentraining on the lines and so on trying to get a good frame and snap a picture. After the flash went off I heard, "what was that?" Next thing I know here come the 2 rent-a-cops telling me that I wasn't allowed to take pictures there because the construction outfit who was doing it was concerned about confidentiality and copyrights...

Jeez - I explained what I was doing, and they were very nice to me, but they still made me delete all my pictures... I had taken some pretty cool ones too!
Unless they are arresting you or they have a warrant for the card, they can't do a thing. They had no right to make you delete your photos.

I think unless there is a sign which tells you that it's forbidden to take some pictures, it shouldn't be a problem.

One trick could be to store some other pictures on the chip and delete them and the "rent-a-cop" (hilarious ) will be satisfied.

I would not have deleted the shots, especially if I had taken them while on public property. They can't wrestle the camera from you. I would have simply left or told them to call the police. I would have tried to avoid a confrontation by apologizing and leaving but I would not have deleted the shots.

were you on mall property? if so they have every right to make you delete the photos cause technically it is their property and they can make whatever rules they want.

In regards to the "rights" infringed upon when shooting some structures, I run into a problem constantly when I shoot our tradeshow booths at shows. We'll spend all the way up to $800,000 total cost on a booth at the big shows so obviously my work wants to see what they are paying for. The only way to do this is with photos, we don't assemble the booths completely anytime other than at the shows. There are signs posted everywhere at all the shows restricting ANY photography. Every show I am having to sneak shots of OUR booth and have been reprimanded many times by security. It's because the show agrees in the contract to protect the rights of your booth. You don't want competitors taking pictures and showing up next year with a booth like yours. I totally understand it, even though I break it. I always explain I'm only shooting OUR booth, but obviously that can be a lie or I can make it look like I'm only shooting our booth, they can't take the chance.

...just thought I'd share another angle. Do I plan to take pics again at the next show, the biggest show, in May?...yep. Do I expect to get in trouble?...not if they don't catch me. I've gone as far as putting my camera in a box and cutting a hole. It can be a necessary evil. I wouldn't want anybody shooting our booth (besides me), not after all the time and money that goes into it.

Not in the United States. (May be different elsewhere.) All they have a right to do is ask you to leave. If you don't they can have you arrested on trespassing charges. But the pictures are yours. A judge issued warrant is required for the pictures to be seized, even for law enforcement.

By the way, I was at the zoo yesterday and caught myself doing what somebody posted about earlier...I was checkin' out other people's gear! I don't think I've ever done that before, but yesterday I caught myself a couple of times sizing them up and mumbling under my breath "that won't come out."

And maybe not even then. Awhile back a young man was asked to leave a local mall because of the shirt he was wearing (a political slogan) which security thought would cause problems for those who disagreed. His father, being a lawyer, took the mall to court and the judge ruled that security could not ask him to leave because the mall is public property, even though it is privately owned.

To take it even further, recently here in Oklahoma a pervert won in court after he was caught shooting "upskirt" shots at a retail store. If I wasn't running to work I'd find the link for you all. It was recent, google it..share the link.

...sickening really. There has to be a line drawn.
