Default Re-sizing photos for forums.

Hello, I am pretty new to photography and I want to share some pics in the critique section. Can someone tell me how can I resize my 5mb files to comply with forum rules without changing the aspect ratio?

Best way is to create an account on a photo sharing site like Flickr or Ipernity or Photobucket. I use Ipernity cause it has a blog built-in.

You upload the original file and the site will create several different sizes for you, you just post a photo that is the correct size, there are instructions on how do it that in the forums.

All photo programs have an “export for web” function, MC. If you tell us what software you use, we can give you instructions as to how to export decent quality/low res pix.

You should not place high res photos on any website—unless you do not care about them being ripped off.

@photologyst- Thanks for that info. I am using gimp for photo editing. It is an open source program similar to photoshop.

Yes they will allow you to download the resized photos but you don't need to.
  1. On the photos page you will see a icon that says "View all sizes"
  2. Choose a size that is appropriate for the forum (say 335x500)
  3. At the bottom will be the URL for the photo.
  4. Copy that to the clipboard.
  5. Back on the forum click the icon that looks like a mountain in the square
  6. Paste the image url into the box and tada:

You can even make the photo a link to your Flickr/Ipernity/Photobucket page:
  1. Go back to the photos main page.
  2. Copy the URL in the top of the browser
  3. Come back to the forum page
  4. Highlight the line with your images URL including the [IMG] tags
  5. Click the icon that looks like a world with a chain on the bottom
  6. Paste in the URL
Try clicking the photo above, it will take you to that photo on my Ipernity account.

ha ha ha... I just noticed Ipernity provides the URL for both the photo AND it's page at the bottom, after several years of using them you would have thought I saw it before now.

In fact I just remembered, the TOS on most of the photo sharing web sites require that you link the photo back to the page. Either the photo itself or with a link below the photo, most users don't bother though, never heard of anyone being busted that's for sure.
