Default Photography Prohibited!

It doesn't happen often... but occaisionally I have run into "Photography Prohibited" signs. Fuddruckers (a hamburger joint), and Burger King in my local area both have the signs. Fudrucker's sign is on the front door, and Burger King's is on the door to the play area.
Of course, when I see such signs I immediately take out my camera and take a picture or two (after all, I'm a Rebel - it says so on my camera). What do you do in such situations?

I can see the reasoning behind the Burger King thing - they're probably just doing a little CYA in case some perv is there to photograph kids. Fudruckers might be trying to enforce some sort of design copyright - so you cant build your own "bobs burgers" that looks like a fudruckers.
The worst they can do is tell you to leave and ban you from the joint, but have you been hassled for it? Not talking about federal buildings... just other public places. I don't go to the Burger King anymore... thankfully the kid preferrs wendys now. Buger King in my area is a bit dicey.

I respect the fact that a sign has been posted prohibiting photography and don't do it.

Their house, their rules basically.
As soon as you take a photo there you are committing a trespass and can be removed, with "reasonable" force if necessary. Don't know what the tresspass law is in your country but in the UK it is a civil offence unless you do not leave when asked.

Pointless pushing your luck though, you will lose.

if you want pictures of your kids tucking into their junk food then simpler to ask if it is ok first.

I grew up living on Air Force bases, so those signs were always around. Got into photography while living there, so we never gave it a thought. Of course, we didn't go out of our way to take pictures near the flight line or other sensitive portions of the base. The Air Force has a way of making the parent pay for the sins of the dependent.

I have seen these signs in a few Basilicas. Keep in mind most of the time when I have been there it has been empty. What do I do?

I take a picture of the sign and then blend in...

Also if people are there I do respect their right to privacy even though I do not believe as they do. A basilica is not a place for street photography.

When I worked in news I always had to get permission from the main office of whatever company - Burger King, McDonalds, shopping malls, etc. - if I was sending a photographer to shoot. It's their way of protecting themselves and although I have been outspoken about my right to shoot anyone, anytime, in a public place, this is private property. They have the right to set the rules.

Holy crap. Thats a cool sign. I guess thats a national security issue or something. I like the area 51 signs that say youll be shot if you try sneaking in.

As for the grab-n-gobbles, yes, I know its technically private property even though its open to the public. And Im aware that if they ask you to leave, and you dont, its trespassing. And yes they can remove you forcefully (or call the cops to do it for them). I wasn't talking about causing a scene, my question was more along the lines of - have you seen such signs in wierd places, or have you been told "hey don't do that!" when taking a picture of something innocuous.
